"Bad Faith" Insurers

On Tuesday the House Judiciary held a public hearing "tort reform" bill HB 2809, which I described last week as the "insurance industry doesn't want to play fair bill." It would exempt big insurance from the state's Unfair Trade Practices Act. HB 2809 would block "third parties" from suing insurance companies for acting in bad faith in disputes over claims.

Norm Steensta, CAG's Executive Director, and always one to look for a way to illuminate some of the dim bulbs around the table, testified with this analogy, "Let's be selfish. Chances are that one-day we will be in an accident with another car that is covered by a different insurance company. We are all potential 'third parties'."

All this week legions of insurance lobbyists swarmed the capitol to push their next wave of bills taking away more of your rights in the civil court system. The WV Consumer and Victim's Coalition for Insurance Reform is fighting back! Today (Friday Feb 21) the Coalition released a new TV ad taking on Big Insurance. Below is the text of the 30 second spot:
